CAMDEN – The Village of Camden celebrated its first National Police Night on Saturday, Aug. 27 at the village’s Tylersville Park.
The event was hosted entirely by the Camden Police Department, with the intention of bringing the community and law enforcement closer together.
Attendees enjoyed live music by the band 4 Mile Creek, enjoyed free hamburgers and hot dogs, snow cones and festival snacks. There were also games and bounce houses, face painting and balloon twisting, all followed by a screening of Sing 2.
There was also a car smash event, with all proceeds going to the Camden K-9 Unit.
Members of the Camden Police Department and the City of Eaton Police Division performed K-9 demonstrations with police dogs Dax and Nykyta, and gave children in attendance a chance to participate in the demonstration.
Members of Camden Somers Fire & EMS also gave those interested a closer look at their vehicles and equipment, but duty called them to an accident early in the event.
The Medflight helicopter also attended the event, giving children the opportunity to sit in the cockpit and learn about its functions.
“This was all on them,” Mayor Toni Keesler said. “This was all arranged by the police department.” Keesler included that he noted the event would not have been possible without the many sponsors, but emphasized that it was all organized by the police themselves.
Camden Council Member Carla Risner, who helped organize the event with the Camden Police Department, commented, “I think the turnout has been wonderful, it’s exceeded all of our expectations. I think that should show to the community, as a whole, what we can do when we come together. I’m so proud of Camden for coming to this event and showing all the support for us and the police department.”
