Jurassic Quest at NRG Center | From Thursday August 4 to Sunday August 7 – Walk among the nation’s largest herd of life-sized animatronic dinosaurs when Jurassic Quest comes to NRG Center. From the largest predators, such as the mighty T-Rex, to playful babies, experience them as they were when they roamed the earth billions of years ago. Friends and family are invited to explore fossil digs, do science and art activities, enjoy inflatable rides and more at this unique dinosaur event. $22 for ages 2 and up; $19 for seniors 65 and older; $36 for an unlimited pass to all attractions and activities for ages 2-12. Hours vary. Tax Free Weekend at Memorial City Mall | From Friday August 5 to Sunday August 7 – Memorial City is offering extended shopping hours and back-to-school giveaways during the official Texas Tax Free Weekend. During these three days, shoppers can save on everything they need for back to school, with many stores offering additional special sales; plus, try your hand at winning a backpack full of school supplies and gift cards every half hour from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. on Saturday. Shopping hours are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Food Truck Friday: Wall-E Movie Screening at Oyster Creek Park in Sugar Land | Friday, August 12 | FOR FREE – Bring out a blanket and chairs for a fun-filled afternoon in Sugar Land. Start the evening with dinner or dessert from local food trucks, then settle in for a screening of Disney’s 2008 animated film Wall-E under the stars. from 6pm to 9pm.YMCA Kids Duathlon at Holcomb Family YMCA | Saturday, August 13 – Children ages 7 to 15 are invited to sign up for this spring duathlon, which will have participants competing in three segments that include running and cycling legs. Registration is $42, closes Tuesday, August 9 at 7:30am. Mayor’s Back 2 School Event at the George R. Brown Convention Center | Saturday, August 13 | FOR FREE – The annual back-to-school party gives families of Houston-area elementary students a chance to prepare for the return to the hallways with school supplies and backpack distribution. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., while supplies last. Parents and children: a pizza party in the central market | Sunday, August 14 – Join as a parent with up to two kids for a morning cooking class that will teach you how to make pizza dough from scratch, make a simple and flavorful pizza sauce, and whip up a delicious pie for lunch . $50 and up. 11 a.m.Jump Jump Kids Festival at the Bayou City Event Center | Sunday, August 14 – More than 30 bounce houses gather in South Houston for an afternoon of local vendors handing out snow cones and shaved ice, plus burgers, ice cream and more. All-day passes start at $20. 1pm to 9pm. AIA Sandcastle Contest at Galveston’s East Beach | Saturday, August 20 – The annual sandcastle competition returns to Galveston for its 35th year, featuring sand masterpieces carefully created by teams in categories including pop culture, kids’ board games, Americana, the space race and much more, all while competing for the coveted Gold Bucket Award. Free, although parking at East Beach is $15 (cash only). From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Kidz Bop Live in Concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion | Thursday, August 25 – The kids-only music group brings family-friendly versions of popular hits to the Woodlands stage, plus fan favorite Daddy Dance Off gives parents the chance to show off their best moves on stage with a combination of Y2K hits. $29.50 or more. 7 p.m.Comic Conroe at the Lone Star Convention Center | Friday, August From 26 to Sunday 28 August – Find some of your favorite characters from the world of comics and pop culture at Conroe’s epic convention that includes a cosplay costume contest, autograph sessions with voice actors like Adassa (better known as Dolores Madrigal from Encanto) and purchases from local vendors. $15 or more; $40 for a weekend pass. Times vary.
