What about miniature golf?
When I was a kid in the 1950s and 1960s, it was a big part of the vacations I went on with my parents and siblings. We jumped for joy as we pulled into the parking lot of a miniature golf course, usually at our favorite vacation destination, the Adirondacks.
In those days, miniature golf venues were much less sophisticated than they are now. Much less sophisticated. Still, we squealed when we hit the ball through the spinning windmill, loved it when we hit it around the little pond or stream, and were absolutely ecstatic when we hit the biggest golf goal of any miniature golfer… the ball in the nose of the clown!
Today’s courses are straight off a Hollywood movie set. Dinosaurs roar, waterfalls thunder over us, pirates peek out of every hole, and wild animals lurk around huge man-made rocks. So funny.
These 14 are representative of all the dozens of miniature golf locations in New York State. If you were once a kid up here, you probably went to a few. If you have children of your own, you will probably visit these places. Maybe even this summer! Each entry has a link to the course website.

There is something magical about a miniature golf course. We loved them as kids, and now, years later, we love taking our own kids and grandkids to them! Such a nostalgic part of the summer holidays from the past to the present. These 14 great New York State miniature golf courses spread throughout the region are where childhood memories still live on.

Who doesn’t love a ride on an old-fashioned merry-go-round or merry-go-round? All ages, from the youngest to the oldest, love to twirl while sitting on a cheerfully painted hand-carved horse or other animal. They are nostalgic for the elderly and an exciting new adventure for the little ones. New York State can be considered the “Birthplace of Carousels” because of the Herschell Carrousel Factory and Museum in North Tonawanda, New York, where they made hundreds of them over a century.
