Congratulations to our new Yorkfest royalty for 2023, Queen Susan Cox and King Steve Moseley, who were crowned last Friday to kick off the weekend of the annual fall celebration. Both were crowned by last year’s King and Queen, Lonnie Berger and Marilyn Jackman, after a luncheon at York Country Club.
I’m well aware that Susan, who for those of you who don’t know is my sister, isn’t used to this kind of attention, and she’s definitely not used to having a crown on her head. Being a past king, I had to give her a bit of a hard time about what it all entails being nominated for a Yorkfest queen. “A nomination is just one part,” I told him. “There will be the swimsuit portion, the talent performance and a public question and answer about world events.” The look on his face was priceless. . . how were some of his not so royal word choices! I actually joke, as a court jester would, and I got nothing remotely related to extraordinary words. I got more of a jaw drop and an eye roll that literally rolled to the sides of his head. I picked up one more crown a day or two before in case I wanted to practice it at home. This was met with pursed lips AND rolling eyes!

Thanks to Cornerstone Bank for sponsoring the past Yorkfest Kings and Queens luncheons, and thanks to the Chamber staff, volunteers and all the Yorkfest committees for making it possible, despite the wet and cool conditions. There was an outstanding turnout for the wide variety of family events and a fun weekend for all. It’s a lot of work. . . Hats off to me!
Sip & Stroll is next on the York City Center social calendar on Thursday evening, September 29. Downtown businesses will be open with a variety of adult and non-adult beverage options. Many will include very special snacks and appetizers, while showing off their fall novelties. Tickets are available at the York Chamber office located at 603 North Lincoln Avenue or can be purchased online at yorkchamber.org at $15 per person or $20 the day of the event. You must be 21 years old to participate. Children are not allowed.
In parallel, there will be a parent’s night at the York Community Center on the same night for children ages three through fifth grade. The price will be $10 per person. Food, fun, games and more are guaranteed! Prior registration is required before September 26. Registrations to cityofyork.net or in person at the community center.
The 2022 Mustang Round-Up is this weekend, September 16-18 at McCool Junction. Friday: Wine Tasting, Tank Fried Chicken, High School Football and Live Band at Smitty’s. Saturday is the parade, church ladies luncheon, Husker tailgate, bounce houses, dunk room, FFA petting barn, golf around town, cornhole tournament, water play time from fire department, booster club dodgeball tournament, fire department rib feed, glowing ladder tournament, kids. movie Sunday’s schedule includes pancake feeding, duck races, golf cart poker run, Pee Wee football, fish fry and flag pull.
A full weekend for everyone!
I also want to congratulate my youngest nephew, Chris Cox, who will be honored at the York High Football game tonight as he will be inducted into the Duke Football Hall of Fame as a wide receiver and defensive end. He was an all-district and all-state wide receiver during his senior year in 1985 at YHS, playing on a 9-2 York team that was one of the all-time greats. Congratulations “Sally”. . . so proud of you!
