56-bed hospital will open on July 6; open day ahead
Ascension St. Vincent’s will soon open the doors of its first hospital in St. Johns.
The 150,000-square-foot, 56-bed facility with eight ICU beds will open WednesdayJuly 6, at 205 Trinity Way in St. Johns near the Interstate 95 and County Road 210 interchange, officials said.
“This is truly a state-of-the-art facility,” said Sean McAfee, vice president of nursing, who gave a tour of part of the facility Thursday morning.
The state-of-the-art nature includes the hospital’s design, which makes it easy for patients to navigate, as well as high-tech elevators in the ceilings above hospital beds and high-tech monitoring equipment.

“Services offered include emergency services, inpatient care, cardiac care, orthopedics and musculoskeletal care, general surgery, laboratory and imaging services… The medical consultation building adjacent to the hospital opened its doors on June 27. Specialty care in the building includes cardiology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology and pulmonology,” according to officials.
The hospital and medical office project cost about $175 million. It is the fourth hospital in the Ascension St. Vincent’s, which also operates facilities in Duval and Clay counties.
McAfee said compassionate care is an important focus for the organization.
“We really have amazing care teams here … I’m not just saying that. I can’t say it enough,” he said.
As part of making patients more comfortable, a last-minute idea came up this week to place towels in the rooms, McAfee said. A pair of swan-shaped towels stood in a room near a window, facing each other forming the shape of a heart.
“We really want to provide a much higher level of patient care and experience,” McAfee said.
The organization chose the hospital location based on data and research showing a need for hospital services, officials said.
The facility will host a family grand opening event for the public from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 1.
“The festivities will include refreshments and hors d’oeuvres, carnival games, bounce houses, face painting, performances by local youth dance studios, hospital tours and more,” officials said.
