What’s happening August 5-11
Unofficial Puget Sound Summer Vacation, Maritime fair weekend festivalreturns this year for the first time since 2019 to cap off a summer full of Seafair events, and this year, it’s going to be bigger than ever!
Perhaps the biggest update at this summer’s Seafair Weekend Festival is the debut of the Blue Angels’ F/A-18 Super Hornet, the Navy’s newest aircraft touted as “bigger, stronger and more faster than ever.” The Super Hornet won’t be the only new aircraft debuting, however, so keep an eye out for the US Navy’s new C-130 J Hercules, affectionately known as the Fat Albert.
This Seafair weekend also marks the 75th anniversary of the US Air Force, and the F-35 Lightning II Demonstrator Team will make a rare appearance to mark the anniversary.
As for previous crowd favourites, this year’s Seafair Weekend will once again feature Boeing Seafair Air Show, HomeStreet Bank Cup (where seaplanes run at speeds in excess of 220 mph), Seafair log boom, a family fun zone and more. Also, the Golden Knights (the US Army Parachute Team) will drop from the sky once again.
“It’s only fitting that with the return of Seafair Weekend in 2022, we also return to the Golden Knights to showcase the skill and professionalism of your U.S. military,” said Lt. Col. Lee Spencer Wallace, Recruiting Battalion commander of the Seattle Army. in a press release, adding that the Army will be represented both in the air and on the ground at this year’s festival.
For the 2022 Boeing Seafair Air Show, the Golden Knights’ landing zone will be located at Genesee Park (4316 S. Genesee St., Seattle), which is being renamed Alaska Airlines Park during Seafair weekend. There will be an opportunity for fans to help the Golden Knights repack their parachutes, along with a meet and greet with members of the demo team. Also at the park, visitors can discover local food, music, wakeboarding, cars and more.
If you can’t make it to the lake, tune in to KONG TV for live coverage of the races and air show. On the radio, tune in to 88.9 FM The Bridge for Log Boom Radio, Mercer Island High School’s radio station, which will be on the air all weekend.

From Hiroshima to hope — August 6
The lanterns will illuminate Green Lake for From Hiroshima to Hope on August 6, the 77th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The event honors the victims of the atomic bombings and all victims of violence. Pre-program activities (including lantern preparation) will begin at 6 p.m. Reverend Dr. Kelle J.
