BOSSIER CITY, La. (KSLA) – Community Support Programs helped parents and children in the Shreveport-Bossier area by hosting their own back-to-school giveaway on Tuesday, July 19th.
The non-profit organization specializes in providing help and assistance to the communities and families within them, while valuing and offering respect to every person they come into contact with.
This event was held at the Bossier Civic Center. When parents and children arrived, they were given new backpacks, school supplies such as notebooks, writing utensils and notebooks, and vouchers that can be redeemed for two or three sets of uniforms. The nonprofit also provided snacks and fun activities for the kids, including musical chairs, face painting and bounce houses.
The raffle was a success with a great turnout. Many parents said they were satisfied with the organization’s help.
“It helps me because if a student has the basic needs and wants expected, their mental space is much healthier, they are ready to learn, they don’t worry if that child has two more pencils and they don’t. I have,” said Nina Marie.
Parents like Tammy Cassidy were able to reduce stress about their children’s needs and the necessary expenses for school.
“Times are tough for everyone right now, and it takes a lot of stress and financial burden on parents,” he said.
According to former Caddo Parish student Izabella Arsenault, having school supplies means more to them than a covered expense.
“They can have free access to school supplies, new backpacks, new clothes. We gave out vouchers so that everyone could get two or three uniforms, so that they would have the tools to be very successful at school, and feel confident and encouraged to start the new year off right,” she said.
Arsenault is participating in a summer internship with the nonprofit group and was responsible for planning and organizing today’s event. If you would like to donate to the Community Support Programs group, please visit Facebook page.
