DULUTH, MN — On Monday, Duluth Public Schools hosted its first “Unity in Our Community” event to kick off the school year.
The event, held at Bayfront Park, was meant to bring together students from the community before school started.
Students from all Duluth public schools were welcome to attend.
“In recent years we have not been able to celebrate it. So you know, we’re looking for ways to bring our community together,” said School Board President Jill Lofald.
He said after several years of distance learning, a massive in-person event would give students a chance to interact with other kids.
“We have a gem of a school district that we want to say is ready to start the school year in a very exciting and energetic way,” Lofald said.
The event was well attended on Monday night.
“The fact that we’re bringing as much of our community together as possible to come down and enjoy the sun and a beautiful space is the best way to start a school year,” he said.
There was plenty to do at the inaugural “Unity in Our Community” event, including bounce houses, a escape tank, food vendors and live music.
Parents say the event helped their children connect with others.
“My daughters met a lot of kids today who will be going to the same school or the same class,” said parent Manik Barman.
The event was a success in the eyes of some, who say they would like to see it return in the future.
“I think this should be an annual event without a doubt. This should be a city event that every district or school system can use,” said Bob Boone, another parent.
The event was free for all attendees.
Lofald believes the event was an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the city’s bright future.
“If there are families looking for the best place to live, the best place to raise their children. I think an event like this is a success for both Duluth and our school district,” Lofald said.
