CULLMAN, Ala. – Goat Island Brewing was the place to be all day Saturday as it hosted Goatoberfest, kicking off Cullman’s 2022 Oktoberfest celebration. This year’s Burgermeister Mike Mullaney and his crew at Goat Island they rolled out the red carpet for visitors who enjoyed pints indoors and outdoors on picnic tables while listening to live music.
“This is amazing. We’re happy to have everyone here. We love Cullman and we love Oktoberfest, so Goatoberfest made sense,” shared Mullaney, dressed in his sharp tights.
Mullaney was just one of many who took their traditional German tights out of the closet. Former Burgermeister Michael Sullins, Goat Island Brewing staff and many others donned festive attire. Women adorned in dirndl dresses served beer in steinzeug-krug or glass beer mugs in keeping with tradition.
Hundreds of revelers rocked out to Oompah-Calypse, Rally Stripe and Avenue G Band while taking advantage of the Freddie Day menu of currywurst, mile sausage, wiener schnitzel and bratwurst served with German potato salad, red cabbage and strudel.
The kids, while tempted by the bounce houses, were wooed by the petting goats area, which was a big draw for kids and adults alike. The crew of German Ax Throwing Co. was present, along with Brickyard Meats with their delicious jerky. Kona Ice had their truck with shaved ice for those looking to cool off during the celebration.
Several churches will be serving traditional German meals through a drive-thru service this week. Senior Day at Oktoberfest will be Thursday, Sept. 29, and Oktoberfest will continue Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit www.cullmantribune.com/2022/09/15/make-plans-for-oktoberfest.
