Groves describes October street closures, pecan festival details, fire department open house and fall festival

GROVES — October will be a busy month for the city of Groves with a fire department open house, an annual pecan festival and a fall festival.
Two of these events require temporary road closures.
The Groves Fire Department is holding its first open house since moving to a new station and this year’s event is expected to draw a large crowd.
Fire Chief Lance Billeaud said the event is scheduled for Oct. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m., and the temporary closure of West Washington from Doyle to Gulf is necessary.
In addition to Groves, there will be representatives from area fire departments: the Beaumont Fire Department will bring a bounce house, the Nederland Fie Department will bring its smokehouse trailer, the Port Neches Fire Department will bring their ladder truck, the Bridge City Fire Department will bring a tanker. and the Port Arthur Fire Department will bring one of its trucks.
Open days were held at the old site and for security reasons Short Street was temporarily closed.
The Groves City Council approved Billeaud’s request for the temporary street closure during a recent meeting.
At the end of the month there will be another street closure. This is set from 10 am to 5 pm on October 30 for a section of Lincoln Avenue from the Capitol to Jefferson for Fall Fest in Lincoln.
The Courtyard Café of Groves, Boutique & Bling and several other businesses are hosting the event.
The Fall Fest will include trick-or-treating for kids, vendors, food, fun for kids, a costume contest and more.
Between the two events is the Groves Pecan Festival Oct. 13-16 at Lion’s Park.
Groves Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ronnie Boneau spoke to council recently and asked questions about the carnival license application.
The carnival gang, whose name was not released during the meeting, will be new to the Pecan Festival.
“What I found was that since COVID-19, some of the bigger carnivals that we’ve used have gone out of business, so there’s even less to choose from,” Boneau said. “And then we were led to believe that the carnival (we used) last year was going to be here. I didn’t find out until the end of April that they weren’t. They actually wanted to cancel RiverFest.” .
The newly approved carnival group is from Arkansas for the Groves event and will begin bringing some of the equipment next week.
The reason the carnival gang brings gear early is because they have less people to do it with.
“They’re having the same problems as the country, getting aid and everything,” Boneau said.
There will be an inspection of the attractions, he assured the council.
