Roll’n on the River Car Show this Saturday in Leland

LELAND — All roads lead to the home of Kermit the Frog and this year, the home of the sixth annual Roll’n on the River Car Show.

Previously held at Warfield Point Park, the event is scheduled from 9 am to 3 pm in front of Vito’s Marketplace, 107 N. Main St.

There is no cost to attend the event.

Vehicle registration costs $25 per vehicle and $15 for each additional vehicle.

“The city will let us block two blocks of the street right there, so we will occupy the whole area in front of Vito’s restaurant, up to the red light and up to the depot area of ​​the train track,” said the organizer of the event Billy Redwine.

As anticipation has grown ever higher, it seems fitting that this year’s Roll’n on the River Car Show will be held in Redwine’s hometown.

He hopes people will not only stop in town to see the featured automobiles, but enjoy the scenery and local restaurants and explore facilities such as the Mississippi Wildlife Heritage and Highway 61 Blues museums.

“We’re waiting for the participation of the people we hope will be there,” he said, excited. “And this year we added some things for kids.”

Bounce houses, pony rides and mini train rides that are added to the car show each year are activities and attractions that kids can look forward to while older attendees check out what is essentially art on wheels.

No summer event in the Delta would be complete without an offering of snow cones and ice cream in addition to Nikki Earl’s egg roll truck.

There will also be barbecue grills and hot tamale vendors during the show.

Redwine highlighted this year’s raffle for a La-Z-Boy recliner to anyone who enters the raffle to bring a canned good to benefit the Leland Food Pantry.

For each canned product an attendee brings, they will be issued a raffle ticket that will go to a roastery or box to be drawn by someone representing the Leland Food Pantry.

“There are a lot of sponsorships from our car show guys and they really want to come and be there. The weather is supposed to be really nice, so we’re looking forward to filling the streets of Leland and having a good show from 9 to 3 and having a good time,” Redwine said.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to two show participants selected as Best in Show winners by Mayor Kenny Thomas.

The main beneficiary of the proceeds generated by this year’s event is Camp Looking Glass, a camp for residents with special needs.

Roll’n on the River T-shirts will sell for $20 each.

Additional profits generated by the event will be used to help families who may be in financial difficulties.

Redwine reiterated the willingness and enthusiasm of the sponsors to contribute to the success of the event.

“We’ve just had a lot of sponsors that have been phenomenal every year that come back and give to us without hesitation,” he added. “We are very grateful.”
