‘Swatting’ has been reported in Wise County

KNOX

It appears that a Wise County resident has become the victim of a “pacification” incident.

If you’re not familiar with the term, “swatting” refers to a prank call to law enforcement in an attempt to get a large number of armed officers, such as a SWAT team, to respond to a certain location .

According to the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, on Sept. 18 dispatchers received a call from a woman who claimed she had been in an argument and had shot her boyfriend. Deputies responded to a location on Campbell Lane in far south Wise County near Springtown and found a woman on the loose, but no shooting had occurred.

The deputies suspect that one of their spectators made the anonymous call to the police.

“There were 35 screen names that received the images,” Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said. “CID will review the 911 call. If the caller is identified, charges will be filed.”

The caller could be charged with making a false report, a Class B misdemeanor.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the “spotting” incident.
