Crookston Ox Cart Days is back with the theme “Lots to do on the 22nd!” and true to its name, there are plenty of events to do in Crookston next week. For each day of this week leading up to the Bullock Cart Days, we will have the events scheduled for each day of the Bullock Cart Days.
Friday, August 19
Friday will begin with the morning pancake breakfast at the Crookston Fire Department on Main Street from 6:00 am to 10:00 am, where people can start their day with freshly baked pancakes, French toast, sausage, milk, orange juice and water. , all free! “This has been a beloved, long-standing tradition. I don’t know how many years they’ve been doing it, but they’ve been doing it for a while and people love it. They were even able to do it during COVID, as a driving event that it still brought people out in droves,” said Libby Boucher, director of Ox Cart Days. “I think my husband and son went up in their pajamas and drove and got their stuff. This starts at 6:00 a.m. on Friday and goes to 10:00 a.m. I love the “pancake breakfast. I think it’s a super fun start to the weekend.” While the event is free, the Fire Department will accept free will donations that will benefit the Department. During this time, sign-ups for the Blue Line Golf Scramble at Minakwa Golf Course will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the Kids Lemonade Stands competition will conclude at the end of the day. Many of the events that had started on Thursday in the Plaza del Center will also return to the same schedule from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., such as the Bounce Houses, Misting Station, Ax Throwing with Ax Barbuda, the Jardís Beers and the $1 Offer for Matinee Movies at the Grand Theatre. Events added to the downtown plaza for Friday include the Crookston Rotary Club’s Duck Drop fundraiser at 4:30 p.m., Water Wars with the Fire Department and Outdoor Solutions, a performance by the Downtown Horns and Community S’mores at 5:00 pm, and a Hawaiian shirt contest at 6:00 p.m
Meanwhile, at Crookston High School, the Miss Crookston Scholarship Pageant will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets for the pageant go on sale on Tuesday, August 16 and can be picked up at Crookston High School the evenings before the day between 6:30pm and 8:00pm, at the door on Friday, or by emailing email to director Jean Ann Bienek. Tickets are $10, and all funds raised will go toward the girl’s scholarships. We’ll have more information about the contestants and the pageant in the near future and we’ll have them on Valley Talk on Tuesday, August 16, with more information about them and what they’ll be doing for the pageant. Meanwhile, the fundraising Mr. GQ Pageant will begin at the Crookston Eagles Club at 8:00 p.m. To top off the night, the Crookston Inn will have Terry Mackner perform an acoustic concert from 9pm to midnight. But for all the teenagers looking for a night of massive fun on Friday night, the Teen Dance will return to the central square and run from 9pm until midnight. Both the dance and the concert require Oxcart Day buttons for entry, which will be picked up at various locations around Crookston or at the entrances to these events.
Saturday, August 20
The Ox Cart Days weekend kicks off with plenty of events to get you going early in the morning. “The 5k/Little Tykes run run by Altru and Biermaier Chiropractic Clinic, starts on Ash Street at 8:30 a.m. We have the Pickleball Tournament at Schuster Park at 9:00 a.m. and the parade of children at the Benedictine Living Community at 9:00 a.m. At 10:00 a.m. with Wish Upon a Star’s Kim Dans directing,” explained Director Boucher. “This has been a really fun hit all year. The bounce houses will be back, the National Guard will be back with their climbing wall, and we have seven Strolling Street Performers, from a juggler to a hula dancer -hoop to a strolling accordionist, and they’ll be roaming. all day Saturday.”
Along with the events in the downtown square which will return from 10:00am to 4:00pm, there will also be a Tae Kwon Do demonstration by Crookston Championship Tae Kwon Do at 12:30pm, a performance by Just for Kix at 1 p.m., and a performance by River City Rhythm Drumline at 3 p.m. on the center square stage. To kick off the celebration into the night, the Torchlight Parade that winds down West 7th Street, Central Avenue and Barrette Street begins at 7:00 pm with Brost Chevrolet hosting a SKOL Parade Yard Themed Party Contest for all the grown ups hometown Minnesota Vikings fans. The first-place winner gets two lower bowl seats for the Vikings-Lions game on Sept. 25 at noon. Rounding out the day will be the Viva Knievel Street Dance in the downtown square from 9:00pm to 1:00am, which is $10 at the door and requires a button, and the red-hot fireworks show . Sunday, August 21
It looks like things are heating up again on the final day of the Ox Cart Days, with a shorter list of events for the final day. “Sunday is nice and mellow. There’s a brunch and bake sale at the Crookston Eagles at 9:00 am, Video games on the big screen at the Grand Theater from noon to 3:00 pm and grocery bingo will be at 12: 30 to 2:30 p.m. the Red Barn on the downtown square where we are giving away $800 worth of groceries on a gift card this year,” explained Libby Boucher. The days end with a wood-fired pizza sale at Wesley United Methodist Church from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
A button or pocket schedule for Ox Cart Days can be picked up at Hugo’s Family Marketplace, Happy Joe’s Pizza & Ice Cream, Crookston City Hall, Erickson Embroidery and Crookston True Value. The Ox Cart Days committee is also looking for volunteers to help with some events during the week in two-hour increments.
