The 35th annual Punkin’ Day celebration brought many members of the Floyd County community and other visitors to celebrate the “Pumpkin Capital of the World.”
The celebration started early in the morning at the pavilion square where runners took off for the Punkin 5k run. At the same time, on the other side of the street there was a car show with cars, new and old on display.
In downtown Floydada there were vendor booths such as clothing stores, crafts and more around the Floyd County Courthouse. There were many different food truck options to choose from. Many small restaurants parked a truck to welcome visitors to the festivities. Aromas of barbecue, corn and street tacos filled the air. Firefighters set up a food truck and sold freshly baked funnel cakes to raise money for the fire department.
Some carnival style games, cornhole, jumbo Jenga were set up around the area, along with several bounce houses for the kids.
On the courthouse lawn, a marquee was set up to host a host of contests throughout the day. Starting at noon, five rounds of bingo were played and five lucky families went home with cash prizes. Later in the day, a pie-eating contest was held in the same area featuring a live DJ.
The attraction that seemed to gain the most attention on the day was RH’s Gospel Dogs. The theme of his performance was to illustrate how walking with Christ correlates with his dog training methods. Her two border collies, Tag and Penny, herded three goats around a fenced area. The dogs listened and herded the goats according to his whistle commands. Before the exhibition, he explained how dogs must be disciplined and willing to follow their master just as we must be disciplined and willing to follow the Good Shepherd.
As the sun set, a concert was held in the pavilion. The Joey Trevino Band and Danny Cadra headlined the event.
