Members of local communities and local police departments will come together Aug. 2 in an annual event aimed at improving relationships and creating collaborative crime prevention efforts.
National Night Out has been held every first Tuesday in August in parts of the United States since 1984. In the Tri-Valley, the 2022 night will include barbecues, parades, activities and contests for children and adults, and visits from police premises and firefighters. .
“Some neighborhoods will have food and ice cream socials,” said Lindsay Ortiz, crime prevention specialist with the Danville Police Department.
Each community’s police department, fire department and council members will attend the event and encourage all residents to participate in their neighborhood.
“For us, it’s about building community — it’s a night to come together and show our support, and vice versa,” Ortiz said of the Danville event.
National Night Out aims to increase awareness of community programs and anti-crime efforts. According to Ortiz, it has proven effective in improving relations between residents and law enforcement.
”Learning who your neighbors are, getting to know your community and then for us as law enforcement officers, it’s a great positive interaction that we have,” Ortiz said.
Events are organized by neighborhood block watch programs, nonprofits, local businesses, and police and fire departments.
Pleasanton
The Pleasanton Police Department invites the community to come out and get to know their police department and their neighbors during their National Night Out celebration.
Pleasanton’s history with this event began nearly 20 years ago and now includes 40 block parties. Each block party can include barbecues, barbecues, ice cream socials, live bands, bounce houses or children’s parades.

Livermore
According to the Livermore Police Department, the past few years have “brought many changes, including new residents.” The Livermore Police Department encourages its residents to not only raise awareness about crime prevention, but also to strengthen neighborhoods that have many new residents.
National Night Out will be held in Livermore on August 2 from 5 to 8 p.m
Registration deadline is Friday to ensure a visit from Livermore PD and friends (CHP-Dublin, Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department).

Dublin
Officials in Dublin will also join thousands of neighborhoods across the country in the National Night Out event.
“Residents are encouraged to meet with neighbors to host family events to promote safety and celebrate community,” according to Dublin officials.
Those who register their events will receive a visit from Dublin Police Services, Alameda County Fire Department and/or City of Dublin officials. The deadline to register is Friday at 5pm.

San Ramon
On Aug. 2, residents of San Ramon are expected to join 38 million residents in supporting crime prevention officials.
San Ramon officials are asking residents to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the night outside on porches, lawns and front steps with neighbors and police officers.

Danville
According to the Danville PD, “Danville celebrates National Night Out by hosting block parties, cookouts and other community events with youth activities, visits from Danville City Council members and officers from the Danville Police Department.”
