13 Family Fun Hikes in New York State to Enjoy This October

Taking a ride has been a rite of passage for many of us in upstate New York.

Growing up, we had a farm (Johnson’s Farm) in my small hometown of Sidney, NY, where we would go for pies, cider, crafts, and a walk. Dear Mr. Johnson would load the hay wagon with children and adults and drag us around his beautiful farm in rural Delaware County. It was so lovely and wonderful and the memory has stayed with me for over 60 years.

Farmer Johnson is gone, and so is his farm, but there are plenty of wonderful places around the upstate region where you can enjoy a ride with the little ones this year. We’ve listed 13 of the best. Many of them are in small towns across the state, some on pumpkin farms, some on apple orchards, and most on family farms (just like the Johnson farm of my youth).

Also on the list are two “haunted landscapes” that have gained a lot of popularity over the years. As you will see, it is no longer just a walk as most farms celebrate the harvest month of October with fun family parties with all kinds of activities for all ages.

So grandpa and grandma relive your youthful memories with your family’s little fry this year and go on a ride near you. You won’t be disappointed!

Here are 13 of the best hikes around New York State. And yes, two of them are “not for the faint of heart!”
