Boston neighborhoods inspire police and community unity on ‘National Night’

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boroughs of Boston met Monday for “National Night”, a nationwide event that aims to familiarize community members with their local representatives and law enforcement officers.

WBZ’s Karyn Regal visited Brighton for the local NNO there, where residents enjoyed bounce houses, live music and free ice cream on Brighton Common. This year’s event breaks a three-year COVID-19 hiatus, with more festivities planned for Tuesday.

Even some law enforcement took to the stage to show off their vocal chords, singing tunes for the crowd.

Monday, Boston neighborhoods Brighton, Hyde Park, Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan and Roxbury held their national night outs. By Tuesday, East Boston, Chinatown, South End, North End, Southie and Dorchester will have theirs.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu attended NNO and urged the importance of a united community.

“In order for everyone to be safe, everyone needs to be part of our community,” Wu said.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden had similar sentiments.

“We have to constantly lift up our communities, lift up the members of the communities; let them know how much we love them and support them,” Hayden said.
