Mint Hill City Fall Events

Night of music and beers

The fun starts at 6:30pm on September 10 with the city’s second beer and music night sponsored by Edifice Construction and Mint Hill Wil Sate Farm. Enjoy beer from Middle James Brewing, Eleven Lakes Brewing, Triple C Brewing and Town Brewing while listening to High Fidelity play rock, funk and Motown hits from the 70s and 80s.

The city’s first beer and music night in May suffered from a shortage of “beers” when beer vendor Olde Mecklenburg Brewery was unable to meet crowd demand. “We learned a lot from the first event,” says Mint Hill event assistant Cassie Brooks, “and have made some changes to make this event a success.”

In addition to more breweries, Taproom Pour 64 will be on hand to facilitate distribution by checking IDs and handing out wristbands. “All customers will be required to provide proof of identification before being served,” says Brooks. “No ID, no wristband. No wristband, no beer.”

Music and Brews will also showcase a variety of food vendors, including Chilaka Taco, 100 Main Beef & BBQ, A Little Taste of Chicago and Sprinkles. The party is open to patrons of all ages, but is aimed at adults, so you’ll see Bocce Ball, Giant Jenga, Connect 4 and Cornhole instead of the kid-focused games and family-friendly bounce houses of Family Fun Nights.

Music and Brews is free and open to the public. Alcohol is not allowed outside.

Family fun night

The last night of family fun of the summer will kick off on September 17th at Veterans Park. The family fun starts at 6:30pm in the Kid Zone, sponsored by Mint Hill Orthodontics, and the fire truck is said to make one last appearance to cool off the crowd.

Jay Hoff & Co take the stage at 7pm. A staple of the Charlotte music scene, Jay Hoff breathes new life into your favorite 21st century pop hits and rock anthems. A mix of nostalgia and top 40, it’s an act you can’t miss!

Food will be available for purchase from several food trucks, including Thrasher Dawgs, Mama K’s Kettle Corn, Sammy’s Snowballs, I Scream for Ice Cream and Chilaka Taco.

Scarecrow decoration contest

Mint Hill’s Annual Scarecrow Decorating Contest begins October 1st! Started during COVID as a way to encourage a little socially distanced fun, the village has continued the popular contest for three years. “Who doesn’t enjoy driving around looking at scarecrows?” says Brooks. “It’s like looking at Christmas decorations—a family activity that everyone can enjoy.”

The contest is open to any individual, business, organization or non-profit organization within the boundaries of Mint Hill Town who would like to contribute to the spirit of the season. The town saw 59 scarecrows dotting its streets in 2020 and 72 last year in 2021. This year, they hope to surpass 85 scarecrows!

This year’s competition will operate in the same way as the previous two years. Those interested in participating must register (and pay a USD 10 fee) by September 22nd. Participants must create their scarecrow and display it outside their business, church, home or club by October 1st. The City of Mint Hill will provide a list of scarecrow sites; scarecrows will also be featured online.

Voting will take place online from October 14 to 21. The winners will be announced at Mint Hill Madness on October 22, but the scarecrows will remain on display until Halloween. First, second and third place winners in both the “business” and “individual” categories will win generous cash prizes courtesy of Novant Health.

Tina Ross Afternoon in the Park

A tribute to the memory of the late curator Tina Ross, Afternoon in the Park will feature work by local artists, crafters and artisans in front of City Hall.

The third event of its name dedicated to Ross, it will actually be the fifteenth official “Afternoon in the Park”. Originally called “Sunday Afternoon in the Park” – a reference to Georges Seurat’s most famous work A Sunday afternoon on the island of La Grande Jatte, and not the location of the event: The annual festival was held for more than a decade on a Sunday afternoon in August at Wilgrove Park.

This year’s Afternoon in the Park will bring more than 30 vendors to City Hall. If you’re in the mood to shop for handmade items this fall, this is the event to be at. “All the vendors at Tina Ross Afternoon in the Park have to make their wares,” explains Brooks, setting the event apart from what you might expect to see at Mint Hill Madness, which has traditionally also welcomed vendors. “Nothing of commercial manufacture is allowed in Tarda al Parc. Mint Hill Madness will feature a few arts/crafts vendors, independent home businesses and local businesses in addition to our sponsors.”

In addition to vendors, Afternoon in the Park will also feature food vendors and entertainment including the Independence Jazz Band, Sophie Miller and Mint Hill Dance.
