The following activities are planned for this weekend throughout the region:
• Sly Fox Brewing Co. hosts its annual Can Jam music festival Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the fields adjacent to its Pottstown brewery. On the main stage will be Klink at 11:00, Drew & the Blue at 12:15, Mike Pinto at 1:45 and Joe P. at 3:30 Cliff Hillis & the Forward Thinkers will perform on the patio. Stage from 5:30 h. In addition to the music, teams will compete in a Can Jam Tournament, in which players take turns throwing a puck between two plastic cans, scoring points if the puck hits or deflects into one of the cans. • Building a Better Boyertown’s 15th annual Oktoberfest will take place in the downtown parking lot Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (rain date: Sunday). Attendees will enjoy a family-friendly, German, fall event featuring beer, food, music and entertainment, and a variety of craft vendors. Kids can enjoy Leaf Creek Adventures’ bounce houses, face painting and gem mining. Adults can try ax throwing, tumblers and bowling. Performers will include 5th Street Remnants, Auerhahn Schuhplatter Verein German Dancers, German Alumni Band, Happy Dutchman German Band and Yodeling Dave Kline & His Mountain Folk Oktoberfest Band. • The first Montco Jazz Fest, part of Arts Montco Week, kicks off Wednesday with a performance by the All Star Big Band at the Rivet Canteen and Assembly in Pottstown. Other highlights include Cymande, the British funk band popular in the early 1970s with their unique sound combining jazz, funk fusion, soul, reggae and afro pop, at Ardmore Music Hall on Saturday at 8pm; the Terry Klinefelter Trio, a live jazz trio performing standards and original compositions, performing Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Community Music School in Collegeville; and Peebo Bryson and Oleta Adams, two of the most significant jazz voices of the last 30 years, performing Sunday at 7pm at the Keswick Theatre. A series of jazz brunches on Sunday will round out the weekend, including performances at Rivet Canteen and Assembly in Pottstown, King of Prussia Mall and The Blossom Cafe. David Bromberg will perform Friday night at Upper Merion Township’s Concerts Under the Stars series.
• Concerts Under the Stars series presents David Bromberg with Craig Bickhardt Friday at 7pm at the Upper Merion Township Building Park. Bromberg’s latest album, “Big Road,” offers fans the most intimate portrait yet of Bromberg and his band, musically and visually. Featuring 12 new songs, five high-definition performance videos and a mini-documentary detailing the making of the album, it was released via Red House Records on a traditional CD, a gatefold vinyl album and a box set combined CD/DVD. Bickhardt’s live show is a mix of absurd anecdotes and personal confessions, accompanied by a well-stocked bag of original songs and the occasional choice cover. • The Miller Center Music Festival will be held Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m. outside the Miller Center for the Arts at Reading Area Community College, leading to a concert by Talking Heads tribute band Start Making Sense at 8:30 p.m. inside the Miller. Centre. Bands scheduled to perform on the free outdoor stage, in order of appearance, are Hot Dad Calendar, Nappy Music, Pseudo Seal, Drew & the Blue and Frog Holler. • Soberstock, an annual free music festival to celebrate recovery and raise awareness of the services available to individuals and families seeking treatment and/or recovery, will be held Saturday from 1-4pm on the Easy Does It campus Inc., Hilltop Road, Bern Township. • The Evergreen German Club, Fleetwood, will hold its Oktoberfest Saturday from 3 to 10 p.m. The Aaron Dussing Polka Revolution Band will play from 6 to 10. Dussing can play 20 instruments, and the band will play many styles of polkas, German music and and all yodeling German food and beer will be plentiful, and other Oktoberfest festivities will take place throughout the day. Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $10 for guests and $5 for club members.
Pianist Jon Kimura Parker will be the guest soloist at Saturday’s Reading Symphony Orchestra concert.
• The Reading Symphony Orchestra opens its season on Saturday at 7.30pm at the Santander Performing Arts Centre, Reading. Conducted by Andrew Constantine, the concert will feature guest pianist Jon Kimura Parker performing the Piano Concerto no. 1 by Tchaikovsky. Known for his charisma, enthusiasm and dynamic performances, Parker is a veteran of the international concert stage. He has performed regularly at the Berlin Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, London’s South Bank, the Sydney Opera House and the Beijing Concert Hall. • The Old Dry Road Farm Festival will be held Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm at Old Dry Road Farm, 202 Highland Road, Lower Heidelberg Township, along a branch of Tulpehocken Creek. This is a living history farm dating back to the late 1700s. The day is family-oriented with kids’ crafts, food including campfire soup, hot dogs, barbecue beef and barn-pressed apple cider . • The Daniel Boone Homestead, Exeter Township, will welcome guests Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for guided tours of the Boone House and to stroll through the historic area with seven 18th- and early 19th-century structures as part of the Pennsylvania Museum and History Commission. Free Day of History Routes. The Daniel Boone House is the birthplace of the famous frontiersman, born in 1734. Built in three stages over the course of the 18th century, the Boone House is a 10-room stone structure fully furnished for the period and located in 579 acres of rolling countryside.
• West Nantmeal Community Day will be held on Saturday from 10am to 3pm, with food and music, inflatable obstacle course, bounce house, ax throwing, Wacky Patti balloons, face painting, giant bubbles, reptiles, crafts and non-profit vendors, helicopter landing. and take-offs, fire trucks and EMS vehicles.
