The Abilene Police Department parking lot at 4565 S. First St. was transformed Tuesday evening into a family festival for National Night Out.
Hosting the event, which included music, bounce houses, free food, the May Farms petting zoo, the sinkhole and informational booths from local agencies, is a way for police department officers to of Abilene connect with the community.
Youth and adults got an up-close look at APD motorcycles, a bomb squad vehicle, a horse-mounted unit and more. Also drawing attention was an Abilene Fire Department motor truck and a ladder truck, as well as a demonstration of a robot dog tested by the Dyess Air Force Base security force. The legged robot is undergoing research and development before being deployed as another layer of security at the base.
The APD prepared about 2,000 people for the event on Tuesday.
