Carnival unites the community

Residents of Carrsville and beyond got to know their neighbors better Saturday, Aug. 6, when they attended the inaugural Old Fashioned Community Carnival at the Walters Ruritan Community House.
Much of the action took place outside the house as children explored bounce houses, took part in classic carnival games, got their faces painted, ate free food and got to meet K-9 Cody and area police officers.
Vendors were present at the community house.
The carnival was organized by the Walters Ladies Community Club.
“I thought it went really well,” club president Shawn Carr said. “I think we passed about 200 people.”
The event ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Carr said the flow of attendees was steady throughout.
“A lot of them were from Carrsville, a few from Windsor and a couple from Franklin,” he said. “I think we had a really good group of people.”
He said attendees also gave organizers some suggestions for things to do next year’s iteration of the event.
When asked what features of the carnival he thought were the most popular, Carr said: “The Hit the Dogs game, with the bags and the big coffee cans, and the bounce houses and probably the sack race of potatoes and the egg race.”.
Giving kids a chance to explore the inside of emergency vehicles and even wear some gear was the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office, joined by the Fire Department Carrsville volunteers, with one of their fire trucks, and the Virginia State Police.
Carrsville-based American K-9 Interdiction was founded in 2001 with the goal of producing expertly trained canines to protect and save lives, as noted on AK9I.edu. K-9 Cody helped represent AK9I at the carnival.
“That dog was great,” Carr said.
The Walters Ruritan Club lent a helping hand to the event, coordinating the parking area located across the road from the community house.
