KINGSFORD – Setup is underway for this weekend’s seventh annual Flivverfest at Lodal Park on West Breitung Avenue in Kingsford.
The event was started by Rick Holland and Kingsford varsity football coach Mark Novara as a fundraiser for Kingsford sports.
Since its inception, the event has raised over $50,000 for Kingsford athletics. In the past, some of the funds have been used to buy concussion helmets and football pads, but the money has gone to other sports as well.
Members of Kingsford’s varsity football team do most of the setup with the help of several adult volunteers, Holland said.
“It’s great for kids to do volunteer work,” he said
The event will begin on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The music starts at 3pm, with local acoustic artist Melanie Rose. Followed at 5pm Fatwood from the Iron River area playing a variety of music starting at 5pm Upper Peninsula-based country rock band Outlaw’d takes the stage at at 21:00 and will play until the park closes at midnight.
On Saturday, doors open at 1:30 p.m., with acoustic variety music by Jim Counter starting at 2 p.m. Northern Wisconsin rock band Rebel Janes plays from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., followed by the local rock and variety band. Next Myle from 9pm to midnight.
The children’s bounce houses will be open on Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. There will also be a water slide.
The cornhole tournament is back. A silent auction is also planned, with many donated items available for bidding.
Class reunions continue to be a popular part of Flivverfest. Five classes plan to meet at the event, including all area classes of 1970 that are celebrating their 70th anniversary this year.
Holland said MJ Electric of Iron Mountain has donated all the power for the event. Tents, fireworks and some lighting were donated by Todd Dooley of Spread Eagle Fireworks, who will also provide the fireworks show at dusk on Saturday. All sound, stages and lighting are provided by Upper Audio in the area.
Food and refreshments will be sold in the venue. Entry is not allowed.
Admission for both days is $10 or $25 per family.
