CHEBOYGAN – Saturday will be a huge day for the Cheboygan Junior Chiefs.
For the first time, the Junior Chiefs will host a “Meet the Junior Chiefs Day” at Western Avenue Field, starting Saturday morning.
“We expect it to be huge,” Junior Chiefs board secretary Michelle Meldrum said. “What the goal would be is for everyone in the community to come out and see what the Junior Chiefs are doing and how many athletes we’re able to get into the program. Junior Chiefs football and cheer is free, and that’s a commitment of the board. We’re trying to show the community that we’re out there and make sure we can keep these sports free.”
The football matches will start at 10 am, with two visiting teams facing each other. After a noon contest between other visiting teams, the 3-4 Junior Chiefs will face Grayling at 2 p.m., while the 5-6 Junior Chiefs will face Grayling at 4 p.m. The day is completed by the 7-8 Junior Chiefs, who face Sault Ste. Marie at 6 pm
The Junior Chiefs 3-8 and Cheboygan High School varsity cheerleaders will also be there.
“We have bounce houses, we have emergency vehicle tours for kids, we’ll be giving away prizes and tickets,” Meldrum said. “We’ll have our varsity cheerleaders down there because the Junior Chiefs are funding varsity cheer for this year and the next few years. We’ll have cheerleaders at the 3-8 level as well as varsity cheerleaders. We’ll have a ton of athletes down there “.
