Focus on fall fun with these family-friendly events in western North Carolina

Trick and treating and pumpkins and more – October brings fall fun of all kinds for all ages. Whether you’re sticking to a hometown festival or planning a road trip for seasonal fun, there’s something for almost every interest, age, and budget. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Week from October 4th to 7th in the hands! Children’s Museum in Hendersonville. Experience the new Dia de Muertos exhibition. Story time is at 10:30 and 14:30 from Tuesday to Friday with a special guest character, Mirabel from the Madrigal family. We celebrate Indigenous Peoples Week From October 10 to 14. Celebrate Cherokee and Navajo culture. Learn about the past and the present through self-guided crafts inside the MakerStudio and story time at 10:30am and 2:30pm Tuesday through Friday.

The 10th Annual Haunted Trail and Glow Trail is October 7-8, 14-15, 21-23 and 27-30 at Adventure Center of Asheville. The trail features 15 live-action outdoor scenes with spooky lights and sounds. It’s a live theatrical experience on an outdoor trail with no contact or gore. Aimed at families with children ages 3-12, visit Alien Landing, Creepy Circus and the Haunted Pumpkin Patch, which are part of the route. A “Sweet Peek Tour” is offered at 6:30 p.m. This is a guided tour for younger guests. The path has no actors at this time and they can decide if they would like to re-enter the line and receive the full show. Play while you wait: Kids can jump out of line to enter contests and play Asheville Plays Monster-Sized Games. The Treetops Adventure Park Aerial Glow Trail is also available for ages 4+. The air routes will be lit up with thousands of laser lights and colorful sparkles. If the kids want a pirate adventure too, stop by Pirates’ Cove for even more things to do. NIGHT toberfest is from noon to 6 pm on October 22 at the Nantahala Outdoor Center. The family-friendly event features costume contests, rowing competitions, live music, giveaways and more. Make a plan to get outside while the weather approaches perfect. Explore all the details at noc.com/events.

An enchanted forest is 6-7:30pm on October 25 at the Highlands Nature Center. Go trick-or-treating on the woodland paths at the Highlands Botanic Gardens. A bonfire, hot drinks and candy will be waiting at the end. Those wishing to participate in this free event should meet in the amphitheater behind the Highlands Nature Center (930 Horse Cove Road). This event is weather dependent and reservations are not required. Get all the details at highlandsbiological.org/nature-center.Experience the harvest by observing autumn: planets, nebulae, galaxies October 27, 28 and 29 at PARI – Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute. Leaves aren’t the only thing to see this month. This harvest of a different kind includes viewing the summer Milky Way and dozens of golden star clusters. Halloween party 2022 is from 10am to 3pm on October 29th in downtown Brevard. The event features free family activities including bounce houses, a costume contest and parade, the Magic Book Bus, a hula hoop dance party, a pumpkin carving contest, food vendors and more. This year’s event features a “Get Set Sesame Street Party” and where visitors can meet the Muppets throughout the day. For more details, visit brevardnc.org/community/halloweenfest. Stay around town for Pumpkin Fest 2022 at Silvermont Parkwhich opens an hour earlier this evening, from 5 to 9 pm For more information, visit silvermont.org.

Carnival in the street of delights is from 5 to 8 pm on October 31st on Main Street in downtown Hendersonville. The event includes trick-or-treating, a Dia de los Muertos celebration, a costume contest, inflatables, live music and more.
