Let the bugling begin as Estes Park hosts Elk Fest. As usual, the festival coincides with the annual fall moose rut, which provides the natural spectacle of sight and sound created during the big game mating season in and around Rocky Mountain National Park. Although the park charges an entrance fee or requires a National Parks Pass, admission to Elk Fest is free on October 1st and 2nd from approximately 10am to 5pm each day. Festivities include antler contests, moose displays, moose-inspired arts and crafts, and Native American music, dancing and storytelling. Additionally, vendors will display artwork and offer signature elk cuisine. Along with the cornet, live country music, rock and bluegrass will fill the air. National Taco Day
Tuesdays are tacos! This year, National Taco Day falls on a Tuesday. On October 4th, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is serving up select tacos for just $1.50 all day. Arvada Scarecrow Festival

This year’s free, family-friendly Scarecrow Festival in Old Towne Arvada features pumpkin and costume contests, rides and more.
For more than 25 years, Arvada has been scaring a good time with its annual Scarecrow Festival. The autumn event shows scarecrows of all shapes, sizes and designs on October 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Plaça de la Ciutat Vella d’Arvada. Entry is free. Family fun includes a scarecrow contest, cone maze, free hay rides, fall treats for sale, vendor booths and more. At noon, little ghosts and goblins parade in the children’s costume parade around the Plaza de la Ciutat. Denver’s LeafDrop

Fall leaves can be colorful, but that also means lots of leaves piled up. It’s Denver LeafDrop time again. Weekday collection points are open from October 10 to December 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Weekend sites are open in November, also from 10am to 2pm. Leaves collected through the program will be turned into high-quality compost and sold to residents next May. Pickup service is free, but open to Denver residents only. Instead of plastic bags, paper is preferred because the bags can also be composted. As an added bonus, there’s a coupon on the site for a free five-pack of 30-gallon paper leaf bags at Denver Ace Hardware Stores. Jeffco used book sale
It’s an ocean of bargains at Colorado’s largest book and media sale, sponsored by the Jefferson County Library Foundation. The Fall Whale of a Used Book Sale takes place from 9 am to 5 pm on October 21 and 22 and from 11 a. at Golden, the sale features thousands of gently used books of all genres, DVDs, CDs, LPs, puzzles and games. Prices range from 50 cents to $3 on most items. Sunday is “Bag Day,” when $8 buys you as many items as will fit in a store-sized bag. Admission is $5 per person, with children under 18 admitted free. If you want to lend a hand, hundreds of volunteers are needed for the massive event. Volunteers are rewarded with two free books for each four-hour shift. Pop Up Grocer
Have you been to a nightclub? If you’re looking for a fresh shopping experience and are committed to supporting small businesses, you’ll appreciate a new grocery store popping up in Denver for just one month. Pop Up Grocer opens in Denver’s RiNo neighborhood (2645 Walnut St.) from September 30 to October 30. The grocer features a selection of up-and-coming brands from women-owned, LGBTQ+ and minority-owned businesses, all in a whimsical setting. , including a human-sized Plinko game. In addition, 90 percent of the brands are vegan. The store will have more than 120 brands and 300 food and beverage products, as well as home, body and pet care.
