BREATHITT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – Thursday marks two weeks since historic flash flooding devastated eastern Kentucky, and one community is giving kids and families a break from the cleanup.
Three bounce houses were installed at Marie Robert Elementary School. The goal was for the kids to have fun despite everything they’ve been through.
Jessica Wilmore says she was driving through flooded areas and thinking about the children now homeless. He contacted his friend, owner of Big Bounce Nation in Lexington, and the two decided to bring bounce houses to the elementary school so that children in the community could laugh, run and play.
They say it’s important for kids to have fun, especially at a time like this.
The Marie Roberts staff is thinking not only of the students, but of a colleague who is still missing. Vanessa Baker, who is one of two people still missing after the flood, works in the school office.
“She has the biggest heart and we really hope that by some miracle we can find her,” director Jason Fugate said.
The start of school has been delayed because many children are homeless and without running water. Right now, Marie Robert’s is scheduled to start on August 29th.
Families can collect donations from the school. FEMA employees also assist families there.
