Kids from all over the city enjoyed water fun on an overcast Saturday at the sixth annual Unity in the Community Water Party held at Bones Hooks Park in Amarillo’s North Heights community.
The overcast skies didn’t dampen the fun attendees had with water balloons, water guns, as well as bounce houses and a slide to enjoy their summer day.
During the event, parents were able to pre-register their children for backpacks that include school supplies and the upcoming Braids and Fades event, which offers free haircuts and braids in the park on August 14. The last chance to register for the event will be in August. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hamlet Elementary.
Tremaine Brown, one of the organizers of the Water Bash, spoke about the importance of events like this to the North Heights community.
“It’s all about the fun to end the summer with a good experience for the kids,” Brown said. “In the northern part, we don’t have much, so we have to create ways to build memories. We want to get these kids ready to go back to school by registering as many as possible for free backpacks, haircuts and braids at the Braids and Fades event.”
In addition to the water fun, free food and snacks were provided for all attendees.
Blanca Masias, co-organizer of the event, said that she has been involved in the event for five years and that she really enjoys bringing summer fun to the children of the area.
“One of the main reasons we do this is that not everyone is lucky enough to go on vacation or be able to do family activities,” Masias said. “So this gives our community a fun-filled day without the worry of having to spend money to have fun. Everyone is welcome to this event for their kids to come out and have fun before they go back to school.” .
River Road Independent School District (ISD) superintendent Richard Kelly said he and his community were invited to the event by Brown to enjoy the day.
“Mr. Brown reached out to us and invited our community as a way to unify communities across the city,” Kelly said. “We really appreciate what Mr. Brown for northern communities and helping all children get ready to start the new school year.”
