Sandburg students make art outside, more

Students at Orland Park’s Sandburg High School kicked off “Art-ober” with Chalkfest, a large chalk mural to which all students in all art classes contribute.

Guest artist Adam Fabianski joined Eagle student artists for the tenth year to design, engineer and help refine the artwork. Fabianski is a professional artist and the son of retired Sandburg coach Fabianski.

Students in each art class made a large grid of the illustration and painted the design with sidewalk chalk, working in small sections of this gigantic work. The 16′ x 37′ plaster mural covered the sidewalk in the north parking lot.

Art teacher Gordon Engelhard, along with now-retired art teacher Mary Michaelson, proposed the one-day event 10 years ago. Past illustrations include The Avengers, Finding Dory, Monsters, Inc. and spiderman The morning is dedicated to layout, followed by most of the work completed by noon, and the afternoon is dedicated to finishing and refinement.

“The mural is a unique experience, remember the students. I hope each of them takes away a sense of pride in having participated in a great celebration of communal art,” Engelhard said.
