The Chautauqua Center i The Waterfront Foundation will give away nearly 2,000 backpacks for the ninth year at community picnic events in August.
Volunteers helped assemble backpacks full of school supplies to be given away at TCC’s community picnic events, as well as for all school districts in the county.
TCC Community Picnics will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday, August 8th in Dunkirk at the Salvation Army located at 704 Central Ave. The Jamestown Picnic will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 9 at Jackson-Taylor Park on Washington Street.
The free picnic events have been rebranded this year with an emphasis on healthy eating and active lifestyles. They will include food, music, bounce houses and children’s games. The novelty of this year is the incorporation of the Jamestown Public Market‘s Mobile Market which will offer free products to attendees as well as food demonstrations Cornell Cooperative Extensionrecipes and information about SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks promotions that make eating fresh food more affordable.
TCC will also offer free health screenings and education, and on-site clinical providers, including pediatricians and nutritionists, who can help answer questions for parents about healthy eating and preventive care.
To receive a backpack, students must have a family member or carer over the age of 18 present. All ages can attend the community event and take advantage of the education and giveaways available to all.
