The annual event is back (sort of)! After being canceled the last two years due to the pandemic, the races will return to the ground this weekend. Yes, you read that right. The teams have been hard at work designing and building their own cardboard dragon boats and will be going head to head at A’ala Park on Saturday. Even if it’s too late to register for the race, come cheer on the crews and enjoy the festivities that include lion dances, a kung fu demonstration, games, food trucks, the bookstore and a keiki activity booth.

If you haven’t checked out this family-friendly riding outfit yet, here’s your chance. They are hosting a free birthday party for the community. Jump for joy on bounce houses, play yard games, paint your face, dance live reggae music from Kahepanaand browse the craft fair and farmers market. We have our eyes (and mouth) on Sweet Streets locally made organic popsicles! Note: There will be a small fee for pony rides. Check the schedule of the day here.

Perfect for keiki, outdoor concerts are back in a big way this summer. In addition to shows at the Waikīkī Aquarium, Waikīkī Shell and Waimea Valley, you won’t want to miss this free event on East O’ahu. Sit by the water on the Marina docks, enjoy hula performances by three talented halau, and end the night with headliners, the Mākaha Sons. Bring a picnic, grab a pizza from Costco, or try Māla Market’s healthy sandwiches (even keiki PB&J).

You have one last weekend to bounce and roll in an inflatable bubble at this Kāne’ohe pop-up. Keiki can battle her friends in the bump zone (think: bounce house arena) set up in the mall hallway in front of Ross Dress For Less. Before you go, read our tips We tried it: Knockerball Hawai’i.

Return for back to school

The last weekend of summer is bittersweet. Many students return to the classroom on Monday, so this weekend will be filled with last-minute school supply shopping, haircuts, and early bedtimes. While you’re getting your family ready, pick up some extra supplies for the keiki and teachers who need them. Here are some places where you can donate:

Credit bowl – Bring an item from the requested supply list to the bowling alley now through Sunday and receive a free shoe rental.
Aloha United Way – Drop off supplies now through Friday at the AUW office (200 N Vineyard Blvd, Suite 700) or at the Hawai’i Theater Center (1130 Bethel Street) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can also donate online through the Amazon registration.
Mahalo I Kau Kumu school supplies drive for teachers – Donate to the Island Crafts Fairs event at Windward Mall a Friday (15:00-20:00) and Saturday (10:00-19:00) and enter to win tickets to see New Kids On The Block in concert.
