Sept. 5 — HIGH POINT — The High Point Police Department’s annual Community Day will mark a pair of firsts when the free event takes place this Saturday.
It marks the first time Community Day has occurred since the start of the coronavirus pandemic and the first time for the Washington Terrace Park location at 101 Gordon Road in East High Point.
Community Day, which offers an opportunity to meet police in a festival setting, will take place from 10am to 2pm. In case of rain, the event will be moved to the Morehead Recreation Center at 101 Price St.
This year’s Community Day is the first since 2019.
“Community Day is an opportunity for law enforcement officers to build more trust with people in the community,” said Lt. Derek Bostic of the High Point Police Department’s Community Engagement Division. “It’s a way for them to get to know the men and women behind the badge.”
Community Day offers guests free food and outdoor games. Activities will include a donut eating contest, bounce houses and kickball competitions.
Players on the High Point University men’s basketball team will be practicing and playing games on the basketball courts.
There will be free health screenings and flu shots.
The first Community Day was held in 1995. For most of its history, the event was held at the old police headquarters on Leonard Avenue, which was closed when the new headquarters opened larger on Westchester Drive.
“This new location is also important to us because we want the people who live around the old police department to know that we are still here and serving them, even though we have moved to a new location,” he said Victoria Ruvio, specialist in police communication. .
Between 150 and 200 people attended the last Community Day of 2019. Police expect more than 300 people to attend this Saturday, Ruvio told The High Point Enterprise.
