I feel blessed to live in an area where I can savor all four seasons, and while each has its merits here in Virginia, my absolute favorite is fall. As an October baby, fall always meant an annual trip to the local farm, where my friends and I would go for hayrides, pick pumpkins, and later carve them at my birthday party. Nowadays, I feel nostalgic at the first sign of changing temperatures when the leaves start to turn golden. By Jennifer Prince
Here’s why Virginia is a must-see fall destination

In an effort to convey these seasonal feelings to my Virginia-raised children, activities like gardening became an annual tradition for us, and all of our recent memories center around one city: Bedford, Virginia. While the area is known for several year-round attractions: antique shops, a vibrant arts community, and the National D-Day Memorial — Autumn really is the best time to explore Bedford. Here are five reasons why I look forward to visiting this picturesque city in the fall.

As one of the hallmarks of fall in Virginia, the changing leaves are what I look forward to the most. Add the Blue Ridge Mountains to the equation and Bedford puts on quite a show while offering some of the best views in the state. Of course, people flock to viewpoints along the Appalachian Trail and the Otter Peaks, but there are plenty of other places to see the foliage in all its glory. The National D-Day Memorial, in Bedford proper, is the highest point in the city, where you can admire the warm-toned mountains. Another option is to take a Sunday drive and stop at various viewpoints along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Apple picking

Bedford is also home to two family-owned apple orchards: Johnson’s Orchard i Hort de Gross – where you can pick apples while leisurely strolling through rows of gnarled, heirloom trees. Whether you’re gathering enough to last a week or ambitious to buy bushels for pies, take a moment to look up at the sky and enjoy the mountain views. If you wait until late October, picking fruit from the trees may not be an option, but you can still pick fresh apples from the harvest bins. Bonus: You can also enjoy a ride and buy apple cider and pumpkins to take home.
Centerfest

One of the most anticipated annual events in Bedford is Centerfest, during which the whole town comes out to celebrate. The streets of downtown Bedford close down, giving way to vendors, live entertainment, food trucks and a farmers market. Kids will enjoy the petting zoo and bounce houses, and adults can check out the craft booths. Many local retailers such as Goose Creek Studio i Treasures of Bellremain open while the festivities continue outside their establishments making Virginia a must-visit destination during the fall.
Apple Valley 5k
Local turkey trots may claim the early morning hours on Thanksgiving, but if you don’t want to get up early on a holiday, join the annual feast. Apple Valley 5k through Gross’ Orchard. A few years ago, I competed with a group of friends as we dodged vaccines, jumped over hay bales, dodged falling apples, and laughed along the way. If you’re in town on the first Saturday in November, it’s an exciting way to get some exercise while avoiding obstacles. Another highlight: Top finishers in each age group receive a coveted handmade piece from Bedford’s Emerson Creek Potteryalthough there is no pressure to run fast.
Seasonal drinks

Of course, fall is known for the ubiquitous pumpkin spice latte, but Bedford offers plenty of seasonal drinks for the 21+ crowd. When autumn rolls around, Beale’s Brewery is launching two flavors: Oktoberfest and Spiced Apple Ale. Beale’s is located in the heart of Bedford, which is the perfect excuse to visit the city centre. The Traipse application immerse yourself further into the city with a scavenger hunt, or simply soak up Beale’s upbeat vibe while sipping beers indoors or outdoors.

There is another worthy option if you visit Johnson’s Orchard as it also hosts Peaks of Otter Winery. Now that my kids are all grown up, a wine tasting before or after the apple harvest has become a tradition. You can taste a flight of eight wines; once you see their wide selection, narrowing down a list is difficult. If you’re in the mood for seasonal flavors, try Grandma’s Apple Pie and Pumpkin Pie wines. Strawberry Shortcake is one of my favorites, and just ask for Kiss the Devil, a tongue-hugging concoction made with 30 varieties of peppers, if you dare. Enjoying a sample of farmhouse wine surrounded by beautiful views is an ideal way to spend an autumn afternoon in Bedford.
