A look at events in the Wilmington area this fall


If you start to see leaves falling from the trees, changing colors, and the temperature starting to drop, it’s a good sign that the fall season has arrived, which officially begins on Thursday, September 22.

Here are some of the annual fall events in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties.

US Open Mackerel Tournament

The 44th annual U.S. Open Mackerel Tournament, one of the largest mackerel tournaments on the East Coast and part of the Southern Kingfish Association Tournament Trail, will be held Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at Dutchman Creek Park, 4750 Fish Factory Road, SE, Southport.

The food court will be open from noon to 7pm on Thursday 29 September and from noon to 5pm on Friday 30 September. Food available for purchase: hot dogs, fries and drinks. On Saturday, October 1, the food court will be open from noon to 7:00 p.m. Food Available: Burgers, BBQ Sandwich/Slaw, Chicken Fries, Shrimp or Fish Fries, Seafood Gumbo, Shrimp Dinners, Fish Dinners and Combo. fish and shrimp salad and fries.

Belville Fall Festival

The City of Belville will hold its annual Fall Festival, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 1 at Belville Riverwalk Park, 580 River Road. There will be food trucks, craft vendors, music, bouncy houses (bounce houses), pumpkin painting, children’s activities and a performance by No Sleeves Magic.

The Kiwanis Club of North Brunswick County, along with the City of Belville and First Bank, will launch StoryWalk.

StoryWalk is an interactive outdoor activity where young children and their families walk through the park, stopping to read the pages of a children’s book hanging along the way.

Oak Island Fall Concert Series

The Back Porch Rockers will be performing from 6-8pm on Saturday, October 1st as part of the Oak Island Night Concert Series. The concert will take place at the Amphitheater at Middleton Park, 4610 E Dolphin Drive, Oak Island. Free.

Sunset at Sunset Festival

The 15th edition of Sunset at Sunset is back with many of your favorites, plus this year it will be held in a new location. The event will be held from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, October 1 at Sunset Beach Town Park, 206 Sunset Blvd. N, Sunset Beach.

Kicking off the festivities at 10:30am will be one of Sunset Beach’s favorites, the Michael Fields Band. The Sea and Sand Band, also a Sunset Beach favorite, will take the stage around 2pm and play until the end of the festival.

The event features a selection of vendors showcasing handmade pottery, gifts, jewelry, accessories, personal care items and original art. In addition, there will be several organizations from the local community.

There will be food vendors and food trucks.

The Sunset Beach Fire Department will be hosting the very popular obstacle course. There will also be a children’s craft area.

Fall Fest at Soundside Park

There will be bounce houses, food vendors and lots of fun for families to enjoy at the Fall Fest presented by Surf City Parks, Recreation & Tourism. The festival will be from 3 to 6 pm on Saturday, October 22 at Soundside Park, 517 Roland Ave., Surf City. Also a live concert by the North Tower Band, from 4 to 6 p.m

Fall Festival in the Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina

Bring the whole family and experience the thrill of a covered wagon ride to a real pumpkin patch, where you can pick your own pumpkin straight from the vine at the Fall Festival at the Gardens of Southeaster NC.

Choose big, small, bumpy, smooth, white, orange, green or blue – pumpkin or gourd.

Kids can paint pumpkins, play in the bubble garden, face paint, make crafts and more.

There will be several selfie stations throughout The Gardens where you can take fun fall photos.

Shop the large selection of mums, flowers, shrubs, trees and garden decor at the Garden Center at Johnson Nursery and browse dozens of local businesses from candle makers, home decor, wreaths and floral arrangements, animals from period and much more.

Also have a beer or a glass of wine at the cash bar. Pizza made to order in the Southeastern North Carolina Gardens brick oven will also be available. There will be several food and beverage trucks on site.

Doors to the event will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 22 at Southeastern North Carolina Gardens, located at 985 Johnson Nursery Road in Willard. Entry is free.

NC Festival by the Sea

The NC Festival by the Sea is an annual coastal arts and crafts festival in the heart of Holden Beach. The festival will feature art in a variety of media from local artisans, live entertainment, contests, food vendors and children’s activities. The event will be held October 29-30 from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Holden Bach Pavilion, 131 Jordan Blvd.

Southport Wooden Boat Show

Mother Nature conspired to cancel last year’s show due to a lunar high tide, rain and a strong southwest wind, but the event is scheduled for 2022.
