TEENAGE DIE IN WEEKEND CRASH – A Bridgeport High School student died in a motor vehicle accident Saturday. Jonathan Gonzalez, 17, died after the crash on County Road 1308, according to the Bridgeport Police Department. The accident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. Gonzalez attended Bridgeport High School and played baseball, according to one GoFundMe arranged by a family member to cover funeral expenses. “Once he got to Bridgeport, he became very good friends with everyone,” the campaign said. “He was also a great student in Bridgeport ISD. He was working hard to get a scholarship for college because his goal was to go to school for auto mechanics[…] He worked hard for what he wanted. Jonathan made people’s days better; if you were having a bad day, he would come up to you and make you laugh out of nowhere or make you feel better.”
NEW FAIRVIEW COUNCIL APPROVED PLAT – The New Fairview City Council narrowly approved the preliminary plat for the Settlers Glen subdivision on Farm Road 407 near the Fairview Airport Monday night. The council voted 3-2 in favor of the plat, which includes 171 single-family lots and nine open spaces. According to city planning consultant Steven Cook of Dunaway Associates, the plate met city ordinances and had to be approved.
THE CITIZENS ASK TO LEAVE THE CITY – During Monday night’s public forum at the New Fairview council meeting, Brittney McClellan presented a list of 58 names for the Chisholm Hills and Martindale Road subdivision, which she said she wants to disconnect from the city. McClellan cited the city’s lack of services for the neighborhood. Three other neighbors also spoke about the issue. Denton County’s Falcon Ridge annexation election will be held in November.
THE BIG FIGHTS AT THE OUTING OF MONDAY – In likely his final appearance of the regular season, Decatur native Bryce Elder was tagged with the loss Monday in the Atlanta Braves’ 4-0 loss to the Miami Marlins. Elder allowed four runs on six hits in a five-inning start. In 10 appearances, Elder is now 2-4 with a 3.17 ERA, with 47 strikeouts and 23 walks in 54 innings.

HUFF WINS HONORS — Decatur coach Steve Huff was named the Dave Campbell Texas Football 4A Coach of the Week following the Eagles’ 35-19 win over 4A Division II No. 3 Hirschi in Week 6. Huff he also won Padilla’s 4AI Coach of the Week award. Poll. Hired from College Station in February, Huff has led the Eagles to a 3-3 record in non-district play. The Eagles open their District 4-4A schedule at home against Burkburnett on Friday at 7 p.m.
FIRE FORUM — Wise County ESD No. 1 will host a fireside forum today at Boyd Methodist Church. The forum will give citizens an opportunity to discuss Proposition 1, an ad valorem tax increase to add paid firefighters and new equipment. The proposal would increase the tax rate by 7 cents for every hundred dollars of valuation. A meet and greet will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the forum at 7 p.m.
