Local communities and groups are hosting a wide variety of celebrations and events this Labor Day weekend. They include:
SCAN
Beginning Friday, Sept. 2, the UP Steam and Gas Engine Association’s 47th Annual Show will be held over Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-5, at the UP State Fairgrounds in Escanaba. This year’s fair features International Harvester, plus one of UP’s largest indoor and outdoor flea markets and a knife and gun show.
There is a fee to enter, but children 14 and under are admitted free.
The doors are open Friday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, September 3, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, September 4, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
New this year is a barn dance on Friday at 7pm and Sunday at 6pm; Spark Show Saturday and Sunday at 9 p.m., weather permitting.
Tractor games and a children’s sawdust scavenger hunt are planned for Saturday. Sunday’s events include slow tractor races, Hawaiian themed shopping cart decorating contest for kids ages 5-14. Carts will be provided and there will be cash prizes.
There will also be a backyard themed trailer decorating contest. Any trailer that can be towed behind a tractor and/or lawn tractor may enter. There will be cash prizes for the winners. Entrants must enter the sweepstakes by 6pm on Friday, September 2 by calling or texting Nicole Landers at 906-280-8453.
Demonstrations of threshing, hay baling, rock crusher, drag saw, shingle mill and saw mills will be held in the Antique Village during the show. Daily parades start at 1:00pm and motor starts at 2:00pm. In Antique Village, the Cook Shack offers a selection of soups and sandwiches. The ice cream parlor serves hand-dipped cones and floats. Attendees will find a wide variety of baked goods in the General Store. A bake sale is located at the back of the indoor market in the Miracle of Life building.

The Escanaba Municipal Dock is the setting for Rock the Dock’s Labor Day celebration on September 3, 4 and 5. Saturday, September 3, Reflections will play from 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday, September 4, Angels and Outlaws will play from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. Smooth will play from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
On Monday, September 5, there will be a parade down Ludington Street at noon. The parade line-up at the downtown Ludington Street Market at 11 a.m. The Labor Monument will be dedicated by Delta County Counties and Labor on the municipal pier.
The group Sit Down Francis and will play from 13 to 16 and We Ain’t Saints from 16:30 to 20 h. For the little ones there will be bounce houses and a zoo. There will be a golf ball raffle by the Delta County Trades and Crafts Union. The City of Escanaba Recreation Department is selling just 600 golf balls with $5,000 in cash and prizes awarded. All proceeds will go to the Delta County Trades and Crafts Scholarship/Scholarship Fund and the City of Escanaba Recreation Department. Food and soft drink vendors.
ROCK
Rock community members and organizations are hosting a variety of activities and entertainment over Labor Day weekend, including a parade, midway food and games, and more than a dozen bands.
In addition to the Rock Lions Club’s annual Labor Day Parade and Festival on Saturday, September 3, several rock and roll, rhythm and blues bands are scheduled to perform at two other local venues on September 2-4.
The Rock Senior Center is also hosting its annual West Rock Yard Sale on Saturday, September 3rd. The Rock American Legion Auxiliary will be selling baked goods. Rock Faith Food Pantry is hosting a non-perishable food drive from 10 am to 2 pm Saturday to “Fill the Gazebo” in the city.
Members of the local Lions Club have been participating in the work bees and have more preparations to prepare the ground for the annual Labor Day Festival known for decades as “The largest small town celebration in the UP”
The annual celebration begins with a parade at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 3. Parade participants can pre-register by calling 906-356-9040. Registration will also be held that day starting at 10 a.m. at the fire hall on East Maple Ridge 37th Road, just east of the city’s single flashing light. There is no designated theme for the parade and no judging will be held.
After the parade, the public is invited to the midway festivities at the Rock Lions Clubhouse, located at 14454 M-35, just north of the city’s flashing light. There will be food, beer, various games, a beanbag tournament, a kids’ tractor, cow bingo, a flea market, crafts, baked goods and bounce houses on site. The local student robotics team will also demonstrate their skills to the public. A local DJ service will provide tunes from noon to 4 p.m
The Wells Lions Food Stand will be offering a variety of food and refreshments.
Rock Lions Club members sell 50/50 raffle tickets. The winners will be drawn on Saturday at 3pm. The “Share the wealth” The draw will award 30% of the proceeds to first place, 15% to second and 5% to third.
The public is also invited to attend 11 performances by the band Friday through Sunday, September 2, 3 and 4 during the second annual Boogie Fest Too concert five miles west of Rock at 14069 County Line G Road. In addition to rock and roll, rhythm and blues music, there will be a pig roast, vendors and a bucket raffle. The event contributes to a community emergency fund with a portion of ticket proceeds.
Bands appearing on this year’s Boogie Fest Too lineup include “Avantage Bird” Friday at 8 pm. Performers Saturday and Sunday include “Todd Michael” “Sunset Strip”, “copper box”, “Cornfield Mafia” “Next Myle”, “Eddie and the Blues”, “Dexter Rowe”, ‘Out Lawd,“”Howard Guitar Luedke,” and “TC Knuckleheads.”
You can also camp at the music festival. On September 2, a “Fun Friday” is scheduled and will include a camping parade, games and an 80s costume contest.

NAHMA
Nahma’s Labor Day celebration on September 4, 2022 begins at 11 a.m. with a parade. Charley MacIntosh is this year’s Grand Marshall for Nahma’s Labor Day celebration.

The celebration will also include craft tables, beer and refreshments, raffles, children’s games, bounce house, children’s escape room, log saw and nail bashing contest, cakewalk, horseshoe contest, pothole contest of corn and much more. Food and refreshments will be available.

CEDAR RIVER
The Biggest Littlest Bridge Walk-The Cedar River BridgeWalk is Saturday, September 3rd. Festivities begin with music at 10 a.m. CDT at the Cedarville Township Hall on the north side of the Cedar River at Old Mill Lane and across from the marina at the Cedarville Township Hall. and Volunteer Firefighters
Opening ceremonies for the BridgeWalk will begin at 11 a.m. CDT, and the walk will begin shortly thereafter.
BridgeWalkers will find parties, food, raffles and various vendors on the south side of the Cedar River Bridge.
Proceeds benefit Sportsmen with Heart, Cedar River Chapel and the Cedarville Township Volunteer Fire Department. This event is supported by the MI Governor’s Health and Fitness Council.
MACKINAC BRIDGE WALK – ST. IGNATIUS
The 2022 Annual Bridge Walk is on Monday, September 5th. The Mackinac Bridge will be closed to public traffic from 6:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, September 5 to accommodate the 2022 Annual Bridge Walk.
For the health and safety of participants, the Mackinac Bridge Authority urges participants to follow CDC recommendations.
There will be no bus transportation across the bridge. Walkers who choose to cross the entire bridge will need to arrange their own transportation to the end of the bridge where they started after the bridge reopens to public traffic at noon. Limited parking is available west of the Mackinac Bridge Authority Plaza area.
For those looking for alternative transportation during the event, local Mackinac Island ferry companies offer transportation between St. Ignace, Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island, as well as between St. Ignace and Mackinaw City. Local transportation companies also offer shuttle service between various locations.
No fee or registration is required to participate in the walk. Walk Starts at 7am You can start walking anytime after the Governor’s Party starts the walk at approximately 7am. No one will be allowed to start after 11:30am, so be sure to arrive early.
The walk starts in St. Ignace at the north end of the Mackinac Bridge in the Upper Peninsula, and Mackinaw City at the south end of the bridge in the Lower Peninsula. To participate in the walk you can:
– Walk from both ends of the bridge, turn around at the midpoint, and return to the city you started from, where your transport is located. The turning points will move to the ends of the bridge starting at 10am, but walkers can walk at least part of the bridge if you start at 11:30am. Walkers must be on the side of the bridge they wish to return to first. By 10am or it will be returned to you.
– Walk from both ends of the bridge and continue to the other side. This option is more like the previous bridge walks. However, as bus transportation will not be provided across the bridge, walkers who choose this option will need to arrange their own return transportation after the bridge reopens at noon. Walkers who do not reach the midpoint of the bridge by 10am will be turned back.
– Walk from both ends of the bridge, continue to the other side, then walk back to the end of the bridge you started from. This option will mean a 10 mile round trip for participants. If walkers on this option do not reach the midpoint of the bridge on their return journey by 10am, they will be turned back.
Walkers will use the outside paved lane on the left as they walk to the bridge, regardless of which end of the bridge they start at. Walkers turning back at the midpoint will turn right and then return on the opposite side off the paved lane. Pedestrians who decide to cross the entire bridge will stay in the left outer paved lane the entire way.
