August 20: Riverside Ministerial Alliance hosted the first year back to school “Summer Jam” at the Elwood Community Center on Saturday afternoon.
Church alliances in Elwood, Wathena and Blair, Kansas (eastern Doniphan County) partnered to ensure that children in the community enter the school year prepared.
The event featured several activities for families to enjoy, including live music, food and free school bags and supplies for all ages.
Elwood First Baptist Church Pastor Anthony Byrd says local churches wanted to host an event last summer for families to enjoy before school started.
“There’s live music, bounce houses and we’re giving away free book bags and school supplies,” she said. “No matter what area you’re from, we want everyone to get out and have a good time before the summer holidays are over.”
The First Baptist pastor says the fun-filled event will run all night and they hope all ages and families will attend.
“It’s about bringing unity to the community,” he said. “That’s what the back of our shirts are promoting today. We want everyone to come together in a safe space and have a fun time.”
The event is held at Elwood Park and Community Center at 7th and Massachusetts.
