Festival of props and pistons
AKRON – The Props and Pistons Festival will be from 11 am to 5 pm Saturday and August 14 at the Akron Fulton International Airport, 1600 Triplett Blvd.
The festival features flight demonstrations, aircraft displays, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities, airplane tours and airplane rides. The dozens of displays range from World War II warbirds to today’s military, commercial and specialty aircraft. Saturday will feature a car show, free flight simulators, a children’s play area, live music and food trucks.

Monster Bash at the Palace
CANTON – The Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, will host the Monster Bash: Bela Lugosi Film Festival and Expo on Friday and Saturday.
Ticket prices at the Canton Palace Theater Box Office are $40 for the Weekend Pass (entry and exit privileges); $20 for day pass (in and out privileges); and $5 per film (no in/out privileges).

Youth pop-up shop
CANTON – The non-profit organization Dream by Royal will present Fun in the Sun: Supporting the Youth Pop-Up Shop from 3 to 6 pm on September 17 at The Martin Center gym, 1253 Third St SE.
The aim of the organization is to provide knowledge, support and fun to young people. The event is free for young entrepreneurs who want to showcase their own business.
Vendors interested in participating should contact Destynee Hardy at 330-268-4466 and describe the business they would like to enter the pop-up shop. A $35 donation is required upon registration for those who are not youth entrepreneurs. Registration ends on September 1st. Vendors should have kid-friendly businesses and can sell their products at the event, but the goal is to have as many free stations as possible.
Assembly starts at 2pm on the day of the event.
Two food vendors are needed, three volunteers to help with setup and fun stations from start to finish (volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and a meal provided by Dream by Royal), two bounce houses, two face painters , shirt. /custom-made items, educators willing to offer books and school supplies.
The event will include a basketball shootout for boys and girls in grades 5-7. Monetary donations or donations of clothing, paper products and books are welcome.
Debates on public education
CANTON – The Canton Area League of Women Voters Education Fund will host two panel discussions on public education at Timken Commons (formerly Timken High School), 521 Tuscarawas St. W. Entrance and parking are on Fourth Street NW.
“What are children learning in history class?” will be presented on Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The panel will discuss efforts to legislate what is taught. “How can we protect public school funding?” will be presented from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on September 8. The table will discuss the impact of school vouchers.

MAP dinner dance
GREEN – The Military Aviation Preservation Society (MAPS) Air Museum, 2260 International Parkway, will hold a dinner dance Aug. 20, featuring music from LaFlavour’s “Five Decades of Hits.”
Guests can attend for dinner and dancing, or just to dance.
Dinner starts at 5.30pm, with dancing from 7pm to 10pm. Tickets for both the dinner and dance are $21.72 per person; For this option you need to make a reservation in advance. No advance tickets or reservations are required just to dance, and the cost is $10 per person at the door. Entry to dance only opens at 6.30pm
Seating for both options is first-come, first-served. No outside food, drinks or alcohol. The MAPS snack bar will be open throughout the event.
Hartville Kitchen Events
HARTVILLE – The Hartville Kitchen, 1015 Edison St. NW, will present Remembering Red – A Tribute to Red Skelton by Brian Hoffman on Thursday.
Doors open at 11:30am, lunch is at noon and the show is at 1:00pm. Tickets are $47.
The Martins will offer a dinner-concert on August 18. Tickets are $52. Doors open at 5:30pm, dinner is at 6 and the concert is at 7.

Lions Club Festival
HARTVILLE – The Uniontown Lions Club’s annual festival to raise funds to support its various outreach and community service programs is Aug. 17-20 at the HRM Complex, 1315 Edison St. NW, next to Hartville MarketPlace.
The festival includes food, rides, a car show, games, instant bingo, bingo, a 50/50 drawing and music.

The festival’s theme is “Community Partnership” and the festival’s grand marshal will be Marion Coblentz, retired president of the Hartville MarketPlace. He helped the Lions find a new home for the festival and remains a major supporter and partner. All proceeds from the festival help support various projects in the local community.
Jackson Amphitheater Events
JACKSON TWP. – Southern Roots will perform a free concert at the Jackson Amphitheater, 7454 Community Parkway, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Wednesday. Chris Wintrip and company will pay tribute to the Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

String quartet in the park
LEXINGTON TWP. – The Stark Parks Summer Serenade Series continues Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Deer Creek Reservoir, 14514 Price St. NE, featuring a free string quartet concert.
Fishing derby
MAGNOLIA – The Stark Parks Sandy & Beaver Canal Fishing Derby for ages 4-15 will be Saturday at Magnolia Flouring Mills Pond, 261 Main St.

Healthiest Soil Contest
MASSILLON – Stark Soil & Water Conservation District is looking for the healthiest soil in Stark County.
Contestants may drop by the district office to collect a standardized 4-inch cylinder, which can be used to collect a uniform sample. Detailed instructions on proper sampling are available at starkswcd.org. Samples can be dropped off at the office from 8am to 4.30pm from 15th to 19th August.
District staff and soil scientists will conduct soil health assessment tests to determine the healthiest soil. The district is located at 2650 Richville Drive SE., Suite 100, Massillon. For more information call 330-451-7645.

Book Sale in North Canton
NORTH CANTON – The Friends of the North Canton Library will hold a book sale on the library patio, 185 N. Main St., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (weather permitting) during the Festival from Main Street.
The annual book sale will be August 17-20, 4-7pm on August 17 reserved for North Canton Friends library members. The opening hours for the public will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on August 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 19 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. August 20.
