The mummers parade back for the 75th time | News, Sports, Employment

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Members of Philadelphia’s Woodland String Band entertain the crowd along West Central Ave. during the annual Mummers Parade in South Williamsport on Saturday.

The South Williamsport Area Mummers Inc. will have its 75th parade on Saturday, October 15, starting at 2:00 p.m.

The parade, which begins on East Central Avenue in South Williamsport, will include live music, games, a bounce house, circus performers, snacks and more.

“We are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Mummers Parade. We have a lot of really special things planned.” said Dori Rankinen, Mummers Parade coordinator.

“To end the parade, we will go down to South Side Park for a celebration. We will make bounce houses and games. There is no charge for these things.” Rankinen said.

The event will also have cotton candy and corn available for $1 each.

“We want people to be able to come especially with the economy, have a great time, celebrate the community and not have to stretch their pockets.” Rankinen said.

Rankinen noted that COVID-19, bad weather and World War II caused several years to be canceled and that this is the first time in two years that the parade will be held.

“Unfortunately, we had a break with the COVID-19 pandemic and the governor shut down the state. Last year, unfortunately, Mother Nature decided not to be kind to us. We had a lot of rain and gusty winds.” , Rankinen said.

There will be live music performances by a handful of local bands.

“We will have everything that is old

favorites people love — high school bands, The Swinging Sagging Seniors come out of retirement for one last parade,” Rankinen said.

“We have also found some circus artists who will do some things during the parade. They’ll come down and do a fire juggling act,” Rankinen said.

“The Moose Family Lodge in South Williamsport is going to provide a very important public service: they’re going to do a kid ID program where they print the kids and take a photo and important information like height, weight, etc. They put it in a flash drive to give to parents. Absolutely free,” Rankinen said.

At the end of the night, there will be a fireworks display, sponsored by Geisinger.

“People are excited about the parade. Be nice to each other and remember we’re supposed to have fun.” Rankinen said.

Event sponsors include The Muncy Bank & Trust, Geisinger, South Williamsport Borough, Woodlands Bank, C & N Bank, Lycoming Chamber of Commerce, JSSB, Freedom Towing and South Side Restaurant, Pizzeria and Tavern.
