MARLBOROUGH, MA — Planning is underway for Marlborough’s 2022 Labor Day Parade, the 70th annual parade in the city’s history and one of the largest in New England.
Marlborough Mayor Arthur Vigeant announced this week that resident Matthew Sargent, a Marlborough Historical Society trustee and Navy reservist, will serve as the parade’s grand marshal.
Sargent earned the role after undertaking recent projects to honor local veterans, including cleaning and mapping their graves.
“Sargent is a unique individual who has dedicated and continues to dedicate countless hours to preserving the headstones of our veterans and ensuring that those lost are not forgotten. He was also responsible for reaching out to 38 families who were honored to participate at our recent and well-attended Medal of Freedom ceremony. A few came from as far away as Florida and Tennessee,” Vigeant said in a news release.
Attendees can also look forward to the return of parade favorites such as the Shriners, the UMass Lowell Marching Band and local musicians such as Flashback, Missy Maxfield and the New Liberty Jazz Band.
New features include bounce houses for children and the Great American Marching Band, the Sudbury Ancient Fyfe and Drums, Boxborough Minutemen and the 85th Saintonge Regiment.
The parade will step off on Sept. 5 near downtown Marlborough at Pleasant and Lincoln streets. Learn more about the Marlborough Labor Day Parade website.
